Cambodia (Angkor Wat)

This is our guest house in Cambodia (the Pavillion Indochine -- run by a nice French guy). It was a really nice place, although with all of the roofing made of bamboo and dried grasses, it really reminded me of Apocalypse Now.  When we first arrived it had been raining, and there were mayflies everywhere.  Thousands of them.  Eating the mayflies were a large number of (increasingly) large toads.  And chasing the mayflies, and attempting to play with the toads (who ignored them) were a pair of really cute kittens.  Quite the introduction to Cambodia!

The best part about the Pavillion Indochine was how we ended up there.

Nicole and I played this whole Cambodia side trip by ear.  We spent one entire day in Cambodia, and then travelled the night before and the morning after.  Our decision to go to Cambodia was made at the last minute.  So we entered the country without a lot of preparation -- and without a lot of cash.  (NB: everything in Cambodia costs United States dollars.  Everything.  Entry visa at the airport: $20.  Exit visa at the airport: $15.  "Guest pass" for a day touring the ruins in Angkor Wat: $20.  And so on.  Note that there are very few (our guide books said zero) ATMs in Cambodia. But I digress ...) So we didn't think about the trip much at all, we just went.  And when we arrived at the airport, we hadn't actually lined up a place to stay for the night.
